Exhibition “Memories of the Karelian Isthmus” at the Institute of Finland in Saint Petersburg.

The exhibition “Remembering the Karelian Isthmus” had been opened on June 8 at the Institute of Finland in Saint Petersburg on the occasion of celebrating the anniversary year “200 years of Finland in Saint Petersburg”.
Archive documents and photo materials dedicated to the history of the Karelian Isthmus were presented at the exhibition.
Museum-estate of I.Y. Repin “Penaty” participated in organizing the exhibit and providing photocopies of pre-revolution postcards with images of settlements on the northern embankment of the Gulf of Finland. These postcards were presented to the museum collection by a famous collector Nicolay Spiridonovich Tagrin in the 70’s.
The postcards presented at the exhibit create an atmosphere of cozy summer villages of the Karelian Isthmus, which by the end of the 19th century became the favorite rest area of Petersburg’s residents. Among the postcards there are views of Kuokkaly (now Repino), Ollily (Solnechnoe), Terioki (Zelenogorsk), Vammelsuu (Chernaya river) and Kellomaki (Komarovo). Representatives of art intellects such as poets, writers and musicians, had rented and owned their summer homes there in the beginning of the 20th century. These places were jokingly called “from Repin to Leonid Andreev”.
However, now all of the surroundings have been unrecognizably changed. Now almost none of those remarkable homes, built in a northern wood modern style, are left behind. Two wars, which destroyed not only buildings but nature as well, have moved through these places. Streets were saved and some of them carry their original names, like those for example, leading to the sea in Repino.
U. Annenkov, K.Chukovsky and D.S. Lihachev have interesting memories about summer life in the Karelian Isthmus.
