“Petersburg Submersion”. An exhibition of works by Svetlana Serebryakova at the I.I.Brodsky apartment-museum

The project “Submersion” raises a question about the influence of the city on its people. In this case the city is perceived as an artistic image embodied in architectural styles of different epochs. The author of the project, sculptor Svetlana Serebryakova, shows an unusual appearance of the megapolis by using typical visual images which correspond to particular architecture styles. Five female images personify five Petersburg's architectural themes: classical, orthodox, art nouveau, constructivism and contemporary. The author made an attempt to find specific features of the city in its citizens, to find an “imprint” of the city on its people. Through using historical styles which have formed the classical and modern face of Petersburg the author conveys the issue of co-existence with contemporary architecture and ensembles of the past. Regardless how each period's historical style appeared it always had an influential environment for the city's citizens. Thus, the project “Petersburg Submersion” can be taken as a kind of a dialogue between the past, the present and the future; between the creators of the city and its people.
