International scientific conference dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birthday of Architect M.Ye. Messmacher (1842-1906)

"ARCHITECTURE OF THE ECLECTIC PERIOD:

ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND INTERNAL CONTRADICTIONS"

Scientific-Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts invites Russian and foreign researchers of the field of studying architectural heritage to participate in the International scientific conference dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birthday of M.Ye. Messmacher, "Architecture of the eclectic period: artistic achievements and internal contradictions" that will take place on October 11-12, 2017 in Saint-Petersburg (in the conference hall of the museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, 17 Universitetskaya Embankment).

The topic of the conference covers the period of development of the Russian architecture of the second half of XIX century, from 1860s to 1890s that is traditionally named in Russian art studies as the period of formed and late eclectic. Organizers of the conference are interested in new research works that have not yet been published and dedicated to theoretical and practical questions of civil and public construction within the evolution of architectural styles, history of studying architecture of the eclectic period in XX century and works related to the activity of architects of the specified period, history of creating certain buildings, researches on studying stylistic variety of decorating facades and interior including creation of objects of decorative and applied art (furniture, lights, etc.), use of finishing materials typical for the period and, finally, problems of modern refurbishment of objects of the cultural heritage of the eclectic period of 1860-1890s.

Scientific management of the conference is performed by professor of Saint-Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering V.S. Goryunov.

Preliminary applications for participation in the conference are considered until May 1, 2017 (the number of participants is limited). Form of application - see Attachment 1.

The Organizing Committee retains the right to decline applications that do not meet requirements of the conference.

Text and illustrative matter is accepted until June 15, 2017.

Materials of foreign participants are accepted in Russian with attachment of theses in English.

Publication of the collection of conference works is expected by the time of conducting the event.

The registration fee for the participants (for organizational expenses) totals 350 (three hundred fifty) rubles.

Travel and accommodation expenses of participants are paid by the sending party.

Distant participation in the conference is not provided.

The International scientific seminar “Self-portrait and portrait of an artist. 18-21 centuries” will take place on November 23 and 24, 2009 in the Scientific and Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, Saint Petersburg (Universitetskaya embankment, 17). The art historians, artists from the USA, UK, Poland and the workers of Russian museums will take part in its activity. The specialists from the Saint Petersburg State University, the Russian museum, the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Scientific and Research Institute for the Visual Arts Theory and History of Russian Academy of Arts, Moscow; the National Academy of Design, New York; the Ryazan State Regional Museum of Art named after I.P. Pozhalostin; the Konstantinovsky Palace, the State Institute for the Study of Art, Moscow; the Residence Museum of I.D. Sytin; the Commonwealth of Artists of Saint Petersburg, the St. Isaac Cathedral, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Saint Petersburg State Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin and the Scientific and Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts will consider the issues of development of the Russian and European portrait genre in the XVIII-XXI centuries. «Self-portrait in works of Gustave Courbet», «Famous and unknown portraits of N.A. Lvov», «Image of an artist in works of A.G. Venetsianov», «Self-portrait and portrait of an artist in works of the Paris neoavant-gargists of the second half of the XX century (new realists are Yves Klein, Arman, Cesar)», «Self-portrait in works of Horace Vernet», «Evan Penny – hyperrealistic deviations in a modern sculptural portrait», «Portrait in works of P.N. Filonov», «Portrait of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu» by the hand of F.M. Malyavin from the collection of M.L. Rastropovich and Vishnevskaya», «Portrait of V.I. Bazhenov in the bosom of his family» in the context of the architectural theory of the age of Enlightenment», «Portraits of «academic titled persons» in the fund of pictures of the Scientific and Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts and many other topics will be discussed by the analysts from different countries. The seminar will be inaugurated by the artist and teacher from the National Academy of Design (New York) Sharon Sprung who will tell about nowadays development of the portrait genre.
